Prince Charles has never looked so happy, so relaxed. Camilla cuddles into him, their arms about each other. You can see straight away why they’ve sent it to all their friends as their Christmas card for 2015.
It is, of course, the festive snap that Diana longed for but, for so many reasons, could never fulfil. Her Christmases with Charles never felt this way.
This is Charles and Camilla’s 11th Christmas together. Compare it with the 11th Christmas of Charles and Diana — their card showed them, with William and Harry in 1991, looking awkward and distant. It was to be their final festive season together.

2015: Charles has never looked so happy, so relaxed. Camilla cuddles into him, their arms about each other
What really comes through in Charles and Camilla’s new card is how comfortable they are with each other. They are no longer young, of course: Charles is 67 and Camilla 68. But that makes it all the more remarkable that they look like a couple in the first bloom of love.
What’s equally fascinating is what Charles’s festive cards since 1981 reveal about the travails of his romantic life.
1981: The country basked in the glow of Charles and Diana’s July wedding. This was to be their only Christmas card with just the two of them
1982: Prince William makes his Christmas card debut. These were the happiest months of the marriage, with Charles in an affectionate pose
1983: ‘Di-mania’ had by now erupted and Charles, so used to the limelight, was already feeling overlooked by the public
1984: A second son, but their smiles hid growing unhappiness. Harry was not the daughter Charles had been longing for
1985: An odd card to choose as Diana’s failure to look into the camera was her early hidden code that all was not well
1986: The smiles hid disunity. By this time, Diana was seeing James Hewitt and Charles had restarted his relationship with Camilla
1987: Sun-tanned on holiday in Majorca as guests of King Juan Carlos of Spain. But that autumn, the couple were hardly together
1988: The distance between them grew as they led separate lives: Charles at Highgrove and Diana at Kensington Palace
1989: Apart again. Each was involved with a lover, and were rarely seen together other than at official duties
1990: Diana showed a growing confidence, having thrown herself in to major issues such as Aids fundraising. As ever, in this picture with the boys, she and Charles were not touching
1991: A picture of formality, hardly worthy of a Christmas card. This was to be Charles and Diana’s last one together. Even the children looked rather solemn
1992: The year of the separation, and Charles and Diana could no longer bear even to pose together for their Christmas card. It was left to the two boys, who were not smiling
1993: Charles, freed from a marriage which had not worked, drops all formality as he relaxes with the boys in Scotland
1995: Behind the show of Charles’s Goonish humour, this was a momentous year. Camilla and Andrew Parker Bowles had divorced and Diana’s bombshell interview on Panorama about her marriage had set the royal couple on the path to their divorce
1996: The year of the royal divorce, and here was Charles proving he was having outdoorsy fun with his growing boys. He was seeing Camilla often, usually meeting her at weekends at friends’ homes
1997: This was taken on the Royal Yacht Britannia just days before Diana was killed in the Paris car smash. Some thought a picture of all three smiling was a strange choice by Charles so soon after the tragedy
1999: This was the year Camilla had ‘come out’ with Charles as a couple, as they were photographed on the steps of the Ritz hotel, at a birthday party for her sister, Annabel
2002: These were still rocky times. It had emerged the Queen had always ‘strongly disapproved’ of Charles having an affair, and had said about Camilla that she ‘does look rather used’
2005: Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and extended family — made up of his two sons and stepchildren, Tom and Laura Parker Bowles — in a picture taken at their April wedding
2006: Another wedding picture, but this time they were guests at the marriage of Camilla’s daughter, Laura
2008: That old Goon Show humour was shared by Camilla. Note the name of the St Mawes ferry behind her. They do look happy together, don’t they!
2009: Royal Ascot, and by now Camilla was a fully fledged royal lady, driving up the course and waving to the crowds
2010: Once you could never get Camilla off a horse, but she is a woman who knows how to please a man, so she joined Charles in one of his favourite pursuits, skiing
2011: A card intended to show Charles’s closeness to Camilla’s family, as he held Camilla’s granddaughter Eliza Lopez at the wedding of William and Kate
2013: Royal Ascot again — and here were a couple completely at ease in other’s company — and very much in the winners’ enclosure
2014: Camilla supports one of Charles’s children — pictured at the opening of the Invictus Games for wounded Servicemen, organised by Prince Harry
